The ROOT RPG Core Book from Magpie Games is a beautifully made and illustrated role-playing game that is based on the board game of the same name. The system is well-designed with mechanics that are fitting to the lore, and the set-up is easy. The biggest surprise in this game is the depth of the material. The core book allows for the generation of a complex military/political situation for the players to explore. The mechanics are not complex but have sufficient detail to allow for good character differentiation. Social interaction is also a key feature in this game. There are no rules for magic in the core book, but the Tinker can accomplish feats that are similar. This is a pure RPG and not a wargame, making it easy to play virtually.
