Free League Publishing's The One Ring Core Rule Book is a revamp of the original game from 2011 that is designed to be set in the years between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Ring. The game's default setting for the second edition is the year 2965 (Third Age), and there have been substantial changes to the rules for the new edition. The system is easy to pick up, and it has basic character options, but there's lots of diversity. The creature generation system is pretty cool, while the background material on Tolkien's world is accurate and has plenty of adventure hooks. The combat system is brutal. From customers' reviews, one perceives that the system expects one actually to roleplay and create a viable background and that if one gets into conflict, he should be ready; it’s going to hurt their character. The quality and mood of the fictional universe befit the game's writing and illustration, and the breakdown of information is clear and intuitive.
