- Sardanapalus (1821) Lord Byron'ın İtalya'da Ravenna'da ikamet ettiği dönemde serbest vezinle yazdığı tarihi trajedisidir. Oyunun konusu Asur İmparatorluğu'nun, son kralı Sardanapalus'la beraber yıkılış hikayesidir. Geleneksel üç birlik kuramına sadık kalarak yazılan oyun, imparatorluğun başkenti Ninova'da geçer. Tarihsel arka plan bilgisi esas olarak iki kaynaktan gelir: Birincisi Diodorus Siculus'un Tarih Kitaplığı adlı eseri, diğeriyse William Mitford'un Yunanistan Tarihi adlı kitabıdır. Byron'ın Goethe'ye ithaf ettiği bu piyes, Avrupa kültürü üzerinde derin etkiler yaratmış, Delacroix gibi ressamlara, Berlioz, Liszt ve Ravel başta olmak üzere büyük bestekarlara esin kaynağı olmuştur.Türk Edebiyatında Sardanapalus efsanesi bugüne dek yalnızca Abdülhak Hamid Tarhan'ın 1919 basım tarihli oyunu Sardanapal'de işlenmiştir.
