- Goethe'nin hayatı boyunca üstünde çalıştığı, edebiyatı ve kimliğiyle bütünleşen ve adeta yazarıyla birlikte büyüyüp olgunlaşan başyapıtı Faust, 1770'te başlayıp 1831'de tamamlanan uzun bir çalışmanın ürünü. Goethe henüz 21 yaşındayken çocuk katili Susanna Margaretha'nın davasından etkilenerek efsanevi karakter Faust'un merkezinde olduğu Urfaust isimli bir eser üzerinde çalışmaya başlamıştı. Daha sonra bu yapıtı geliştirip yeni sahneler ve diyaloglar ekleyerek başyapıtına giden ikinci adımı attı: Faust: Bir Fragman. İlk kez 1790'da yayımlanan bu eser, ancak 1808'de tamamlayacağı Faust I ile olan benzerlikleri ve farklılıklarına, bir fragman olarak nitelenmesine rağmen kendi başına bir bütün, bağımsız olarak da okunabilecek bir metin.
