Adını ilk kez 1821'de yayımladığı bir İngiliz Afyonkeşin İtirafları denemesiyle duyuran De Quincey, İngiliz Posta Arabasında gençlik yıllarında kılpayı kurtulduğu bir araba kazasında ölümle yüz yüze gelişinin düş gücünü nasıl harekete geçirdiğini çarpıcı bir çağrışım zenginliğiyle dile getirir.
