Horror Editorial Review

** When Evil Lurks [Blu-Ray]** "When Evil Lurks" emerges as a compelling addition to the horror genre, renowned for its atmospheric dread and harrowing imagery. Set against the backdrop of a rural agrarian community, the film pulls viewers into a living nightmare after two brothers stumble upon a grotesquely possessed individual. The horror unfolds as they grapple with not only the supernatural but also with moral dilemmas and their own fears, creating a tension that saturates the film. Critics have praised the cinematography and the grounded approach to gore, highlighting the stark and brutal visuals that effectively shock the audience. It features a wealth of creatively disturbing moments—from unsettling deaths to visceral body horror—that adhere to the terror of the unknown, steering away from over-reliance on CGI. While viewers applaud its chilling atmosphere and authentic special effects, some have noted that the narrative could have benefitted from a clearer exposition. The film introduces intriguing lore regarding possession, yet it often leaves audiences wanting for more elaboration on its mechanics. The pacing falters towards the end, with individuals expressing dissatisfaction with the third act's resolution. Nevertheless, the film is aptly dubbed as one of the standout horror films of 2023, earning comparisons to classics like "Hereditary," and resonating with fans who appreciate horror that transcends traditional tropes. Overall, "When Evil Lurks" delivers a truly unsettling experience that will linger in the minds of viewers long after the credits roll—a must-watch for horror aficionados who crave a challenging and thought-provoking film. **
